Exterior view of Fort Ontario. Before 1902 this area would have contained earthworks similar to Fort Stanwix to create a glacis and ditch to protect the outer walls of the fort from attack and artillery fire. The fort is stone and earth construction with 4-5 interior buildings completed in the 1860s. Previous forts on this site date to the French and Indian Wars.
